A police officer was shot while responding to a Sunday evening car crash in eastern Pennsylvania, authorities said.

Pottstown police were called at about 5:06 p.m. to a two-car crash at Beech Street and North Mount Vernon Street, according to the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office.

The DA’s office said one of the vehicles’ occupants struggled with officers at the scene while reaching for a firearm in the vehicle.

He then ran to his home on Winding Road and shot an officer, causing a non-life-threatening wound to his shoulder, according to prosecutors.

Police returned fire but did not hit the man, the DA’s office said. The wounded officer was taken to a hospital and was in stable condition as of Sunday night.

The DA’s office did not identify the suspect or say what charges he is facing in a Sunday press release.

The cause of the crash that preceded the shooting is unknown.
